Burbank water can leave mineral scale on a disposal's grinding components over time. We inspect that buildup alongside the unit's age, use, sound, and condition instead of assigning a fixed local lifespan.
The other Burbank-specific factor is the age of the electrical. Homes in Magnolia Park and Verdugo Viejo often still have the original 1950s branch circuits. A 1 HP Evolution Excel pulls more current on start-up than a Badger 5, and on a marginal 15-amp shared circuit the breaker will nuisance-trip. When we replace disposals in those older Burbank homes we often recommend sizing down slightly — a 3/4 HP Evolution Compact runs cleaner on the existing circuit than a 1 HP unit that fights the breaker every start.
By far the most common Burbank call. The Badger 5 is the default disposal in almost every 1990s–2000s Burbank condo and rental. After 7–12 years the internal seal weakens, water gets past the shaft, and the motor eventually fails. Sometimes it leaks first, sometimes it just goes silent. We replace, we don't try to repair these — the labor to open the housing costs more than a new unit.
Very common in Magnolia Park and Rancho ranch homes with original 1950s stainless sinks. The plumber's putty under the flange has hardened and cracked. Water pools slowly at the front edge of the cabinet floor. Fix: drop the disposal, scrape the old putty, re-bed with fresh, re-torque the mounting ring.
Almost always worn or broken impellers — usually caused by chicken bones, cherry pits, or hard shells over years. On older units we replace; on newer units we can sometimes swap the shredder ring assembly.
Sign of an internal short or overheating. Usually the motor winding is damaged. Replacement, not repair.

Fix: Replaced with an Evolution Compact 3/4 HP. Also re-bedded the sink flange since the old putty had cracked. On-site time: 65 minutes, hauled the old unit.
Downtown Burbank
Issue: 2004 Downtown Burbank condo — disposal humming, no spin, tripped the reset three times.
Fix: Jam from a corn cob fragment. Freed the impellers, cleared the debris, tested. 20 minutes, cheapest kind of visit.
Media District
Issue: Small-lot rental near the Warner Bros lot — disposal working but dishwasher flooding every cycle.
Fix: The original installer had never removed the dishwasher inlet knockout plug. Punched it out, cleared the line, verified drain. 40 minutes on-site.
