Silver Lake is right next door for us, and it's a neighborhood of hills. Streets around the Reservoir, the Micheltorena hills, and Moreno Highlands climb steeply, and houses are often built into the slope with the kitchen a full flight of stairs above the street. We plan for carrying the new unit and tools up in one trip.
The housing mix is interesting under the sink. There are 1920s Spanish bungalows and bungalow courts near Sunset Junction, mid-century modern houses by architects like Neutra and Schindler around the Reservoir, and plenty of duplexes and small apartment buildings along Hyperion and Silver Lake Boulevard. Many kitchens have been updated by owners who care about design, which means wall-hung shelves, farmhouse sinks, and cabinets where the disposal has to share space with a filter and a pull-out trash drawer.
Farmhouse and apron-front sinks are worth mentioning: their drains often sit farther back, and a tall disposal can collide with the trap or the back wall. We measure first and bring a compact unit when the space is tight.
