Echo Park has some of the oldest housing in Los Angeles. Angelino Heights, especially Carroll Avenue and Kensington Road, still has Victorian houses from the 1880s and 1890s. Elysian Heights and Edendale, on the hills toward Elysian Park, are packed with 1910s–1930s cottages and Craftsman homes on very steep lots. Around Echo Park Lake and along Sunset and Glendale Boulevard there are many 1920s apartment buildings and newer infill complexes.
Old houses mean kitchens that were never designed with a disposal in mind. The sink cabinet might be an add-on from the 1970s, the outlet under the sink may be a later addition, and the drain often has been rebuilt more than once. When we come out, a lot of the work is figuring out what's there before deciding how to fix it.
It's also a neighborhood with many renters and many owner-renovators. Renovated Victorians and Craftsmans tend to have nicer sinks and a better-quality unit; the apartments tend to have whatever the last handyman put in.
